The Watkins Glen Fire Department is one of 45 departments in the United States selected to receive a free pet resuscitation kit.
The specialty safety kit will allow firefighters to treat animals on scene that are suffering from smoke inhalation at fire scenes. The new equipment is the result of a nomination made for the department to the Invisible Fences company, which is celebrating their 45th anniversary. In addition to three different oxygen masks and lines for different sized animals, the department also received a small leash that can be used to pull an animal out form under a piece of furniture.
Approximately 40-THOUSAND dogs and cats die each year from smoke inhalation.
