A 58 year old Beaver Dams man was sentenced to 3 years in prison Tuesday in U.S. District Court. Henry Dean, the Third, who was convicted of wire fraud, was also ordered to pay 120-THOUSAND dollars in restitution.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, between September 2014 and October 2016, Dean engaged in a scheme to defraud renters of vacation properties located in the Finger Lakes region by advertising vacation homes online. Prosecutors say Dean advertised at least two homes as large vacation homes with various amenities that were available for rentals upon receipt of a fully refundable deposit. In reality, the property advertised as the Finger Lakes Guesthouse property was under significant construction, and was not available for rent and a second property advertised as the Watkins Glen Guesthouse was actually owned by another individual who never gave the defendant permission to rent the property or advertise it for rent.
Dean promised to maintain deposits received from customers in an escrow account, which did not exist. Because of the status of the properties, the defendant later cancelled the reservations for many of the customers and refused to refund payment.
The financial losses to the more than 20 victims totaled approximately $137,272.46.
