Orlo “Merlin” Covert, age 96, passed away on Wednesday (November 28, 2018) at DeMay Living Center.
Friends may call on Sunday (Dec. 2) from 2 to 3p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. at the Cheney Funeral Home 70 Main Street Phelps. Private burial will be in Bellona Cemetery.

Merlin was born on February 18, 1922 In Benton Center, N.Y. the son of the late Bert and Margaret Covert. He was an Army Veteran of WWII serving from 1940-1945. He worked for Tarr’s Dairy, Shuron Optical and retired from American Can as a Journeyman Machinist.
He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Ruth Covert of Newark; daughters Linda (Leo) Fenner of Geneva, Beverly Hamelinck, Ruth Lahr and daughter-in-law, Dawn Covert all of Phelps; son-in-law, Robert Lahr of Phelps; grandchildren Michelle Fenner Graham, Rodney Hoerter, Willard and Lisa Hamelinck, Melinda Hamelinck, Heidi (Billy) Poormon, Michael Bogart, Denise Kronenwetter, Terry (Chris) Stuck and Danny Covert; great-grandchildren Alex and Sarah Graham, Whitney Hoerter, Cortney (Tyler) Guy, Jenna, Lindsey, Brandi and Anthoni Hamelinck, Chanai Roche, Paige and Derick Burbridge, Thomas Corsner, Amber and Dane Kronenwetter, Calvin and Levi Stuck; great-great-grandchildren Cole Heorter and Wade Guy; sister-in-law, Jean Gunkler; and brother-in-law, Dick (Trina) Harris.
He was preceded in death by his son, Walt Covert; grandson, Dale Covert; brothers Frank and Lloyd Covert; great-granddaughter Katie Stuck; and son-in-law, Richard Hamelinck.
