LOCATE FINGER LAKES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT: Enhancing Collaboration To Bring Career Opportunities to the Region
Michael F. Nozzolio
It was a gathering of over 100 of some of the brightest minds from all across the Finger Lakes region. I’m referring to the economic development summit meeting held in Auburn last week along the shores of beautiful Owasco Lake, hosted by LOCATE Finger Lakes.
Co-sponsored by Lyons National Bank LNB, the LOCATE Finger Lakes summit attracted a diverse group of individuals from every corner of the Finger Lakes who share the goal of positioning our region to enhance the development of meaningful career opportunities for present and future generations to live here, work here and raise their families in this very beautiful and livable region.
The LOCATE Finger Lake summit brought together economic development professionals from over 8 counties. Also attending were city and village mayors, county and city managers, labor leaders, 4 CEO’s, over a half dozen corporate vice Presidents, 3 of our region’s largest employers collectively representing thousands of employees, family business leaders, county legislators and town supervisors, county and city IDA Board members, local economic development members, educators from BOCES, colleges and universities, library association members, and newspaper publishers among others.
Focus was placed during the summit on initiatives having job growth potential for the Finger Lakes region. Speakers outlined New York State’s regional economic development process; the newly created New York State Center of Excellence in Food and Agriculture housed at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva; and new concepts of marketing the Finger Lakes region for business and job growth opportunities.
The unique perspectives of Judy McKinney Cherry and Paul Barrett had special impact at the summit. Both Judy and Paul spent most of their lives in other regions of our Nation, and within the past decade have adopted the Finger Lakes region as their home. Their presentations provided the summit attendees with a heightened appreciation of the numerous assets of the Finger Lakes region, many too often overlooked and taken for granted by longer term residents.
LOCATE Finger Lakes was pleased to bring people from throughout our region together to meet and collaborate, with many who had not been together before. LOCATE Finger Lakes will continue to provide forums for those who care about our Finger Lakes region and wish to share ideas, enhance collaboration, stimulate innovation and make our beloved region a better place to live, work and raise a family.
