The New York State Inspector General’s Office has arrested a 54 year old Bath man on charges he defrauded the Workers’ Compensation system and stole benefits to which he was entitled to.
Jeffrey Smalt is accused of collecting benefits after claiming he was out of work with Bath Electric, Gas and Water due to an injury he suffered in July of 2017. An investigation revealed Smalt began working with his family farm in the following months, selling, delivering and advertising merchandise all while claiming he had not been working at all. This alleged intentional misrepresentation allowed Smalt to be paid more than 15-THOUSAND dollars in insurance benefits from last December to this past May. He is charged with grand larceny, insurance fraud and perjury, all felonies.
Smalt will appear in Bath Town Court at a later date.
