The NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and offensive lineman Ali Marpet have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension through 2023. The deal, for the 25-year old Hobart graduate is worth $54-million, including $26.8 million guaranteed. Tampa Bay selected Marpet out of Hobart College in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft. Marpet is now one of the highest-paid interior linemen in the league
Marpet gave the Bucs good reason to extend him this year as he is playing some of the best football of his career. Pro Football Focus listed Marpet among the league’s top guards in the first quarter of the year, and he is a big reason why the Bucs have allowed just nine sacks so far this year. The contract extension is a recognition of Marpet’s value as a pass blocker and could be a preemptive investment in the long-term health of franchise quarterback Jameis Winston.
