Wegmans shoppers donated 91,342 pounds of food during the Food Bank of the Southern Tier’s Fill the Bus food drive campaign last month.
Shoppers donated 130-THOUSAND dollars throughout the campaign, an 18 percent increase in giving from last year’s totals. Five Wegmans stores in the Southern Tier participated in the campaign. All of the food collected will remain in the community, including Schuyler and Tompkins counties, and benefit the Food Bank’s BackPack Program, which provides children at risk of hunger with a bag full of kid friendly, nutritious food to take home each Friday throughout the school year.
More than 41,000 school-age children in the Southern Tier qualify for free- or reduced-price school meals. When school is not in session, children who rely on school meals may not get the nutrition they need. The BackPack Program attempts to reduce that gap and ensure that every child returns to school on Monday ready to learn.
Last year, 98,798 BackPacks were distributed to 2,816 children. All 41 school districts in the Food Bank’s six county service area participate in the program.
