Governor Cuomo is renewing his call for criminal justice reform, including the elimination of cash bail for those facing misdemeanor and non-violent felony charges. Speaking at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park Saturday, Cuomo says it’s an issue of fairness:
Cuomo also says he will continue to push for prison closures:
Cuomo proposed eliminating cash bail during his most recent State of the State Address, but the measure didn’t make it into the final budget bill.
Cash bail means that if you’re rich, you get to walk and if you’re poor, and you can’t make bail, you sit in jail. That isn't justice.— Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) September 29, 2018
We’re going to end the cash bail system once and for all, we’re going to do it in New York, and we’re going to do it this year. #GlobalCitizen
