Auburn City Council last night heard from a group of Cayuga County veterans who want to build a memorial honoring the founders of an Auburn veterans post and drum and bugle corps on property owned by the city. The members of Carnicelli-Indelicato American Legion Post #1776 told council they’re ready to erect the monument on a patch of grass near Market Square Park.
City Clerk Chuck Mason said on Friday’s Finger Lakes Morning News Mayor Quill and council members expressed support for the proposal.
Planning and Economic Development Director Jennifer Haines told council there is a moratorium on all monuments as the city develops an ordinance covering the erection of memorials on city property.
The proposed monument stands over 4 feet tall and would have four facings engraved with the founders’ names.
