Joan was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was the daughter of William Albert Hartigan and Amelia Margaret Yarrow. She grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and attended Cathedral High School in Boston, then went to Boston City Hospital’s School of Nursing. While working at Boston City Hospital’s Harvard Service operating room, she met William H. Newman, whom she married in 1959 and had two children, Geofrey and Alison. The Newmans moved to Alexandria, Virginia, while Dr. Newman served in the Army and Joan worked in the operating room at Alexandria Hospital. Moving to Geneva in 1964, they became a vital part of the medical community and organized what became the Friendship Square and Round Dance Club. Joan was active in the Hospital Auxiliary, participating in many of their Follies with her love and talent for music, and was president of the Ontario County Medical Society Auxiliary. She was president of the West Street School P.T.A., served on the Geneva Education Advisory Committee and was involved with the Geneva Scholarship Association. The Newmans were founding members of the Geneva Opera Society.
She is survived by her son, Geofrey Newman; daughter, Alison Newman (Michael D’Amico); granddaughters Meghan, Lauren and Kristen Newman; brothers Stephen and Eugene Hartigan, Muriel Coleman, and Jeanne Riddle, and her nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, her husband Bill; her brother Kevin Hartigan, and sister-in-law Mary Newman.
