Schuyler County has successfully opted into a class action lawsuit against the federal government to recover payments in lieu of property taxes on federal lands within the county. Earlier this year, the county learned the U.S. Department of Interior may have underpaid them. County Administrator Tim O’Hearn says the county receives federal dollars for the local costs associated with hosting portions of the Finger Lakes National Forest in the town of Hector.
The county learned this week it had been accepted in the Kane County, Utah vs. United States class action suit. O’Hearn says the Legislature authorized County Attorney Steven Getman to join in the class action proceeding.
Schuyler County is one of three counties in New York State that is home to federal forestland.
