The endorsed Republican, Conservative and Independence Party candidate for Ontario County Sheriff, Silvio Palermo, unveiled his school safety plan for Ontario County schools Wednesday.
“There’s nothing more important than the safety of our children,” said Palermo. “As a father of two young children, I don’t want to have to worry when I send them to school. That’s why I have a plan that can be implemented right away, with no change in laws. We can’t afford to waste time when our kids’ safety is at stake.”
As Sheriff, Silvio will implement a Threat Assessment Task Force to address the unique needs of each school. The task force, which includes law enforcement, mental health professionals, parents, teachers, and school leaders, will come up with a detailed plan for each school district in Ontario County. Creating individualized school plans takes into consideration the unique needs of each community and involves the members of the community that have great familiarity with the needs of each community. The task force will make recommendations that can be implemented immediately, without having to wait for new laws to be passed.
New York State Police Officer Frank Ryan (ret.) said, “When it comes to school safety, the only thing people seem to talk about is gun control. But the Ontario County Sheriff doesn’t have any authority when it comes to gun control legislation – that’s the State’s job. And, if you know anything about Albany, you know those guys don’t agree on much. Schools need solutions now and Silvio is the only one working with the community to make a plan that can make our kids safer right away. There are a number of things that can be done to protect our school children beyond gun control and Silvio Palermo is the one who will do them.”
