The New York State Department of Health has selected Cayuga County’s 2017 Harmful Algal Bloom Response Team for its 2018 Honor Roll.
Health Department Director Kathleen Cuddy said on Tuesday’s Finger Lakes Morning News the recognition is shared with everyone who is concerned about the state of Owasco Lake and the other Finger Lakes.
The HAB Response Team worked prior to last year’s bloom season to educate health department staff, community partners, and the public about the harmful effects of HABs. They also worked 7 days a week taking water samples for analysis, educating waterfront operators, and responding to calls from concerned citizens.
Cuddy added this is the time of year when the blooms usually increase, but there is already a proactive approach underway.
Cayuga County’s selection is part of DOH’s Health Works! Campaign, which raises awareness of the essential services public health workers and the public health system provide.
