Two former Auburn Correctional Facility inmates have been charged in connection with the death of fellow inmate Daniel Wingate.
Wingate was found by correction officers in his cell unresponsive and covered with blood the evening of July 9th, 2017. He died five days later at Auburn Community Hospital from blunt force injuries to the head.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Chris Valdina tells Finger Lakes News Radio Wingate’s death was initially investigated by ACF staff.
The two former inmates, Rupert Alberga and Ashton Bellamy, were indicted by a Cayuga County Grand Jury and pleaded not guilty in county court Tuesday.
Alberga is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The 36 year old was convicted of murder in Albany County in 2012 and is currently serving a 24 years to life sentence at Attica Correctional.
Bellamy is charged with manslaughter and assault. He was convicted of attempted assault in Nassau County in 2015 and was sentenced to 8 years in prison.
Both men will be back in court November 8th.
