For the third time in less than a month, Indian Pines and Red Jacket beaches in Penn Yan are once again closed until further notice due to the suspicion of blue green algae. The swim areas were closed August 4th and 16th and re-opened each time five days later. The public swimming areas will remain closed until the state Department of Health clears the area.
Some blue-green algae can produce toxins. These pose health risks to people and animals if exposed to large enough quantities. People, pets and livestock should avoid contact with water that has scums on the surface or is discolored. Do not drink untreated surface water.
