The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn citizens of another growing scam that has been victimizing members of the community.
The scam consists of an individual or individuals contacting a potential victim via telephone claiming to be a member of Geek America or another computer servicing organization informing the victim that they need to refund them money for multiple different reasons. The suspects will then ask for the router information of the victim to gain remote access to their computers. Once they have access to the computer, the suspects will bring up the victims banking information or another bank account indicating that a deposit was made into the account of the victim several thousand dollars more than what the original amount was supposed to be. The suspect then asks the victim to remove the access amount from their account and to obtain Google Play cards, Walmart gift cards, Green Dot cards, or other transaction mediums. Once the victim has the cards, they are asked to send the numbers on the back of the cards to the suspects leaving the victim a substantial loss as the amount was never actually in their account.
Ontario County Sheriff’s Office warns to be extremely careful allowing anyone to remotely access to your computer(s) or personal information and the safest solution would be simply not allowing anyone access to your computer at any time. It is especially important to be cautious of an individual contacting you without prompting and explaining that you are owed money you generally knew nothing about. If questions arise, contact the organization using their official website or phone number to verify the information being presented to you. It is also wise to search the internet to determine if similar scams exist or the phone numbers the suspects are calling from are not flagged as a scam to ensure you are not victimized by this schemes of this type.
Always be cautious about people calling and asking about access to your personal information or financial accounts. Take time to research what is being portrayed to you before committing to anything or allowing a stranger into your computer. If you are concerned about the possibility of a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance.
