It’s not an algae bloom in Owasco Lake. Experts say the unusual green color that appeared on Owasco Lake Tuesday does not appear to be the result of a harmful algal bloom.
The Auburn Citizen reports that the Owasco Lake Watershed Inspection Program said in a Facebook post that the lake was experiencing “an unexplained, widespread green coloration/turbidity” event. Pictures showed a large blue-green cloud covering a wide portion of the lake, including off the shore of Emerson Park. Researchers from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges are working to determine the cause.
Despite the cloud, City of Auburn officials say the city’s water filtration plant was having no issues and water was still safe to drink.
