Assemblyman Gary Finch is blasting Gov. Cuomo’s recently announced conditional pardons for thousands of parolees in what Finch calls a misguided effort to restore their voting rights.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Republican lawmaker said dozens of those pardoned are convicted sex offenders who are detained in civil confinement at psychiatric hospitals across the state. He said “issuing pardons to pedophiles in exchange for their votes is a disgusting deal with the devil that shows New Yorkers exactly who this governor is.”
Finch added, “If the governor was serious about real reform, he would engage in good-faith, bipartisan negotiations to pursue policies that would balance public safety and victims’ rights with sensible efforts to help reduce recidivism and fix our criminal justice system. Instead, he’s abusing his executive authority to issue pardons to pedophiles who must live in secure, supervised locations away from children. This is a new low, even for him.”
