The suspect in the Waterloo shooting has been captured at the Cheerful Valley Campground off Route 14. 48-year old Emerson Tohafjian, of Fayette, was found in a tent at the campground. It’s reported that Tohafjian has been taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
Waterloo Police Chief Jason Godley confirms that one woman and one man are dead, another woman is hospitalized following the shooting at 54 Virginia Street. Godley says the two women were returning to the apartment after a night out. They were dropped off by a taxi, when the driver saw a man with a gun entered the home behind them. The taxi driver called police.
The names of the victims have not been released. Family members are being contacted.
Tohafijan was arrested last month following a violent domestic incident in which he allegedly choked a woman and threatened to kill her numerous times before forcibly raping her. He was also accused of injuring a cat that was inside of a pet carrier he threw against a wall. He was also arrested in early June following a domestic incident in the town of Varick.
State Police are now leading the investigation. More information will be released at a Thursday 10 a.m. press conference

8:15 AM UPDATE- Shelter in Place Oder Has Been Lifted
A shooting in Waterloo late last night has the village locked down as police are still searching for the suspect.
Reports are that 2-people are dead after a shooting at an apartment house at 54 Virginia Street.
A reverse 911-call was sent out to Seneca County residents at 1:45 this morning.
Police are advising Waterloo Village residents to “shelter in place.”
They are looking for a fair- skined, white male, 5′ 11”-165 lbs, with blue eyes, and blonde hair. The suspect was last seen wearing blue jeans, no shirt, a black vest and carrying a green bag.
Waterloo School District Officials have now closed all school buildings and cancelled today’s summer school and Spark programs. This robo-call was sent to Waterloo School District parents around 6:30 this morning.
Waterloo Village Police, Seneca County Sheriff’s Deputies, and New York State Police have an area from Swift Street to Virginia Street surrounded. The home were the shooting occurred is between the Waterloo American Legion and the Laundry Depot laundromat. State Police have brought in a helicopter to help in the search.
No other details have been released.
