4 people suffered minor burns to their legs after the boat they were on caught fire Saturday afternoon at the north end of Canandaigua Lake near Kershaw Park.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, when Eugene Allaire, of Penn Yan, started his 1989 Thompson Brothers boat, the engine compartment and rear floor area caught fire. Allaire and his three passengers, Jacqueline Allaire, of Penn Yan, along with David Bedient and Katelynn Bailey, both of Canandaigua, jumped into the lake along with their 3 dogs. The boat was fully engulfed as the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol Unit brought Canandaigua firefighters out in the water to put the blaze out.
The four people on board the boat were checked over at the scene by Canandaigua Ambulance personnel but declined trips to the hospital. The dogs escaped injury.
The boat is a total loss and the cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature due to a mechanical issue.
The Yates County Marine Patrol and Canandaigua Police Department also assisted at the scene.
