The City of Geneva internship is one of several annual 10-week programs organized by the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning’s (CCESL) Summer of Service Program and the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education, which offers students the chance to work at local institutions.
“These students spend their summer break experiencing Geneva from a new perspective and contributing to the expansion, growth and health of anchor institutions in our local community,” says CCESL Director Katie Flowers. “Through their internships, students gain meaningful professional development while experiencing Geneva as engaged citizens.”
In addition to producing materials that range from event fliers and social media pages to formal press releases and potential policies, the pair help facilitate and administer the GNRC’s Facebook page. Robles welcomes the opportunity to learn about advertising and digital media in the public service and non-profit sector.
“Since my first day at the Colleges I have been told that a summer in Geneva was a must,” says Robles, a media and society major from Los Angeles, Calif. “I was interested in finding a way to insert myself into the Geneva community and to build the relationship between the community and students.”
Robles’ coursework in media and society with his adviser Assistant Professor Rebecca Burditt has informed his passion for creating inclusive content for diverse audiences. As Junior Class President, President of the Campus Activity Board and as a member of Mosaic NY, a student-led social justice theatre company, Robles has organized and executed large-scale events and communicated with an audience.
Widham, of Waterford, Conn., is also enthusiastic to immerse herself in the community and translate her academic interests into professional experience.
“This position allows me to combine my love for the arts and for English into marketing and communications. I enjoy writing press releases, developing fliers and promoting events,” says Widham, a writing and rhetoric major.
