Cameron Howell, a member of the Class of 2018 at Dundee Central School, has been awarded the Ruth Soules Scholarship. Ruth (Allen) Soules’ family established the scholarship in her memory to be awarded to a Dundee Central School graduate planning to pursue a career in nursing or other health care-related field. Howell will be studying occupational therapy at Keuka College.
During his high school career, Howell has achieved high honor roll status every quarter, as well as the Presidential Honor Roll each year. He took the Health Professions program at Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center, where he received two Top of the Trade awards. He is a member of the National Honor Society at Dundee Central School, as well as the National Technical Honor Society at Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center. He also received the Maroon “D” award for participating in varsity sports.
In the community, Howell has been involved in the Scottish Festival and Village Christmas programs, having been crowned Dundee’s Highland Scot in 9th grade. He has been a member of the Yates County Youth Board for three years, serving as secretary. He works at Veraison’s Restaurant at Glenora Wine Cellars.
The $1,000, one-year scholarship memorializes Ruth Soules who received her licensed practical nursing (LPN) degree from the Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing at Geneva General Hospital, Geneva.
The scholarship is awarded annually to a Dundee Central School graduate who plans to attend the Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing in Geneva, or secondarily, another nursing school, or thirdly, pursuing another health care related career.
The scholarship, which is administered through the Finger Lakes Health Foundation, is awarded on the basis of academic achievement, participation in school and community activities, commitment to a career in healthcare services and recommendations.
After earning her LPN, Soules went on to a 35-year nursing career at Schuyler Hospital, Montour Falls, working on the floors, in the emergency room and the operating room. She was also active in the Dundee Central High School PTA, Girl Scouting, the Rock Stream Presbyterian Church and the American Red Cross.
