The sudden onset of summer-like temperatures could hasten the development of Harmful Algal Blooms in Owasco Lake and other Finger Lakes.
Cayuga County Senior Planner Michelle Wunderlich is a member of the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council. She tells Finger Lakes News Radio the county is behind a proposed plan to use satellites to track the formation of the HABs.
The proposed joint project by NASA and the US Geological Survey is still in the idea phase, but it would be good having real-time information from an eye in the sky.
Dr. Nima Pahlevan, Chief Research Scientist at NASA’s Sciences and Exploration Directorate, is seeking funding to develop software that would alert stakeholders when a satellite detects HABs and other anomalies in Owasco Lake.
