A Steuben County corrections officer is being credited with saving the life of an inmate choking at the jail in late April.
Sheriff Jim Allard reported Robert Labar’s heroics at this week’s meeting of the county legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee. Labar noticed an inmate choking as he was supervising the collection of lunchtime meal trays. He immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver and called a “code blue” as part of the jail’s policy. Allard told the committee that it’s very like Officer Labar saved the inmate’s life with his calm and decisive action.
Allard also credited Labar for his use of training and his attention to detail.
