Seneca Falls, NY, – (June 1, 2018) – For the past four years, the Seneca County House of Concern’s Need to Feed Challenge has been an important element in keeping the organization’s food pantry stocked and the non-profit agency equipped to help those with food insecurity in our local communities as well as bring awareness to the needs of our neighbors.
The need in Seneca County remains steady with approximately 10.7 % of residents struggling with food insecurity. These are children who go to bed hungry, senior citizens who decide between buying groceries and purchasing medication, and parents who do without, so their children can have enough to eat. In 2017 the House of Concern served an average of 400 households monthly which amounted to nearly 175,000 meals for the year. There have also been recent challenges with necessary building and equipment repairs as well as ever increasing operational expenses.
Every year a generous group of sponsors agree to set up a fund to be matched by individual donations. Trinity Episcopal Church in Seneca Falls helped kick off the challenge again this year with a check for $3,400.00. To build the sponsor fund, Trinity has joined with other churches, including The First Presbyterian Church of Seneca Falls, Calvary Lutheran Church and The United Methodist Churches in both Seneca Falls and Waterloo, as well as many individuals.
Committee chair, Larry Driscoll reports “We are currently at $10,000. We are now reaching out to the community through a mailing to match the sponsor donations. Every donation of food (at $1 per can) or money received will also be counted towards our total.”
