I often chide my conservative co-hosts on the Finger Lakes Morning News for the inconsistency of their beliefs.
That is, like many on the right and like some, but not nearly as many on the left, they decide how they should feel about an action or comment based not on the action or comment itself, but by the side of the political debate from which it came.
FBI investigating Hillary Clinton? Yeah, bring it! FBI investigating Donald Trump? Terrible, spying, worse than Watergate! Special Prosecutor investigating Donald Trump for a year for possibly working with a hostile foreign power to steal an election? Too long, get over it, you liberal weenies. Special Prosecutor investigating Bill Clinton for four and a half years for a failed land investment? Impeach him!
Today, Roseanne Barr lost her ABC sitcom for remarks she made on Twitter. There are two surefire ways to end your media career in the 21st century. At number two, comparing non-Hitler things to Hitler. And at number one once again this week, comparing black people to monkeys! Even the most ardent, Make America Great hat-wearing, Trump-loving conservative can’t condone that, right? Right? Right? Sigh.
You see, one of the keys to the success of the second Roseanne show (she had one back in the 80s and 90s, kids) is that the fictional Conner family were, in fact, ardent, Make America Great hat-wearing, Trump-loving conservatives. And so, the reaction has poured in from the right. The most common theme is that her free speech rights are being violated. Hmmmm, when were free speech rights last in the news? Oh yeah, about ten freaking minutes ago when the right agreed that NFL players have none and should just shut up and stand for a song about freedoms many of them enjoy to a lesser degree because of the color of their skin.
So, will my co-hosts say that NFL players should be allowed to kneel and that Roseanne losing her show is an outrage? Will they take the equally consistent position that NFL players should be forced to stand and that ABC’s decision to dump Roseanne was a good one? Or will they say that NFL players should be forced to stand, but that Roseanne losing her show is an outrage and proof that liberals hate America, the flag, the troops and apple pie? Sigh. Tune in tomorrow and find out.
