Gerald “Jim” Garren, 85, of Penn Yan died Monday (May 21, 2018) at Geneva General Hospital.
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday (May 26, 2018) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan, NY. A Memorial Service for Jim will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Barrington Rifle Club, 33 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837.
Jim was born on February 8, 1933 in Malone, N.Y. He was the son of Gertrude and David Garren. He later moved to Penn Yan, N.Y. and graduated from Penn Yan Academy. He was in the Marines from 1953-1956 where he was stationed in Japan. He married Sallie Bordwell on April 21, 1956. He was employed at DuPont in Dresden, Shay’s Gas & Oil, water treatment plant, he then went to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital where he worked for 19 years and retired from. Jim was an avid hunter, he loved to go woodchuck hunting with his buddy John Symonds. He hunted deer right up until last year. He loved going to the Barrington Rifle Club on Thursday nights. He helped out with many activities there in his younger days. He loved watching the NY Mets and the Syracuse Orangeman basketball. He loved to be outside mowing the lawn and puttering in the garage.
Jim leaves his wife of 62 years, Sallie; his children Barry Garren and Kelly (Michael) Leavy; grandchild, Shannon (Benjamin Bennett) Leavy; his brother, Wayne (Barbara) Garren; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Walter Bluteau and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marge and Karol Hartman.
