Leon Payne, 89, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018.
Friends and family are invited to call on Sunday (May 20) from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mull Funeral Home, 113 Virginia Street, Waterloo. A Funeral Mass service will be held Monday (May 21) at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 25 Center Street, Waterloo. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Beverly Animal Shelter, 50 East River Rd. Waterloo, NY 13165.
Leon was born on May 19, 1928 in Fayette, N.Y. to the late Myron and Dorothy (Dark) Payne. He was a graduate of Waterloo High School. He married Mary A. DeWall on November 1, 1947 and together they raised four children, Dorothy, Debbie, Jim and Dawn. Leon retired as a State Certified Union Welder and worked for several construction companies, including Bero and Elderlee. In his younger years Leon played softball in the Waterloo Fireman’s League, volunteered for the Waterloo Fire Department and was an avid stock car driver, known as Straight 8, and nicknamed the notorious “Post Hole Payne”. He also enjoyed being active with Citizens Band Radio. Leon loved NASCAR, playing Euchre and country music. He played steel guitar in his wife’s band “Mary and the Music Makers”.
Leon is survived by his daughters Dorothy (Ted) Sloan, Deb (Gary, Sr.) Gladis; sons Jim (Bernie) Payne and Ed Campese; grandchildren Cindy (José II) Medina, Michelle (Mark Robinson) Dean, Mary Jo (Greg) Viscardo, Peggy Sue Sloan, James “Jimmer” (Shannon Trottier) Payne, Jr. and Joshua (Christina) Payne; great-grandchildren Nicholas Hunt, Alexa Hunt, Zarrien Sloan, Mikayla (Josh Murphy) Coleman, Zachary Payne, José
Medina III, Julianna Viscardo, Camryn Gladis and Autumn Viscardo; great-great-grandchild, Adalynn Sloan; sisters Jessie Dadson and Helen Curtis; brother, Clifford Payne; many nieces and nephews; special friends Betty Stein, John and Lee Crowell and Kate Moses.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; daughter, Dawn Campese; grandson, Gary Gladis, Jr.; brothers Willis and Harold; and his sister, Louise McCulloch.
