The Equal Rights Heritage Center in downtown Auburn will have a statue of Harriet Tubman outside the entrance when it opens in October.
State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey joined community leaders and Miss Tubman’s descendants at a ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday morning to unveil the model of the 7 1/2 foot statue that depicts the freedom fighter Harriet Tubman.
Her great-great-grandniece Pauline Copes Johnson was taken by surprise by the announcement.
The 90-year old added she can’t wait for the center to open.
Famed sculptor Brian Hanlon has been commissioned to create the statue that was donated by the family of George and Mary Cuthbert of Auburn in memory of George Cuthbert’s father Ed.
