A Port Byron couple has been arrested on felony scheming to defraud charges following a four-month long investigation by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
35-year-old Martin LaFrance and his wife, 35-year-old Jolene LaFrance are accused of creating a “GoFundMe” page for their child that had cancer. Detectives say the couple received several thousands of dollars in donations. However, an investigation revealed the child was never diagnosed with cancer or any other medical condition that was alleged in the solicitation. The LaFrance’s were also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Both will appear in Montezuma Town Court at a later date.
The investigation is ongoing.
