It’s taken over 5-years, but there soon could be a monetary windfall for the Seward House Museum in Auburn.
A judge has ruled Thomas Cole’s 1841 painting titled “Portage Falls on the Genesee,” can be sold. The court agreement between the State Attorney General’s Office, Seward House and the Fred Emerson Foundation allows for the painting’s sale with the proceeds benefiting the Seward House Museum.
The painting is owned by the Emerson Foundation, and was removed from the museum in February 2013. An appraisal conducted in 2008 put the value of the painting at $18 Million.
The painting depicts the Genesee River passing through what is now part of Letchworth State Park, and was presented to then NY Governor William Seward. It is expected to be sold at auction by Christie’s, the world-renowned auction house.
