Counselor in Training Program at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills
4-H Camp Bristol Hills has been committed to providing opportunities for positive youth development for 93 years. For our older campers, this includes providing opportunities which prepare them for the workforce. Our Counselor in Training (CIT) program is geared specifically toward 16 year-old campers who are looking for a great leadership opportunity while working with youth. Participants will explore what it means to be a positive role model to a diverse group of campers. They will be given the opportunity to work with people who are as young as 5 right up to working with our adult counseling staff.
Camp is a great place to start developing job readiness skills because it is a supportive atmosphere where CIT’s are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone. CITs are given opportunities to practice public speaking and presentation skills by planning and running activities for campers. They work on providing and receiving positive and constructive feedback from other peers and counselors. They are encouraged to reflect on aspects of their day and discuss what went well and how things could have gone differently. The overall mission of this program is to cultivate leadership potential in every individual participant.
For many of our current staff, this program has served as a way to “get their foot in the door” for future employment. Completing the program does not guarantee a future job at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills, but CITs who have completed the program will be given an interview, provided they get all of their paperwork in by February of the following year.
Counselor in Training programs are offered in two sessions: Session I (July 1-6 and 8-13) and Session II (July 15-20 and 22-27). Session II is nearly full, but there is still space in Session I. There will be two open houses at camp this spring, May 20 and June 10, with tours at 1pm and 2 pm. Open houses are a great opportunity for perspective campers to come see the property and meet some of the staff, and also for returning campers to learn what’s new. Camp staff will be available to talk with families, answer questions and provide activities and guided tours of the camp. Additional information on camp’s programs can be found at 4-hcampbristolhills.org, requesting a brochure by contacting Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County at 595-394-3977 Ext. 435, or visiting their office at 480 North Main Street, Canandaigua. CIT is a great resume builder for your child’s first job! Don’t miss your chance! Space is very limited!
