The sudden arrival of spring weather has increased the danger of wildfires.
Firefighters from seven departments spent much of Monday afternoon battling a wind-whipped grass fire in the Town of Fleming. The fire was sparked by embers from a piece of furniture burning in a fire pit at a home on Dietrich Rd.
The arrival of warm weather and an abundance of downed branches and dry vegetation is a recipe for wildfires.
The State Department of Conservation enacted a statewide open burn ban in March and it remains in place until May 14. The DEC says open burning is the leading cause of wildfires in the state.
