Congressman John Katko met with local law enforcement and school officials in Syracuse on Monday. He outlined his efforts to improve school safety and keep children safe.
Auburn Police Chief Shawn Butler was among those in attendance. He tells Finger Lakes News Radio the Congressman and former federal prosecutor has been instrumental in giving law enforcement additional tools.
Congress authorized over $2.3 billion in new funding in the recent omnibus bill for school safety as well as mental health training. The Chief is not sure how much will reach our area.
The bill also includes funding for active shooter training for police and peer-to-peer mentoring for at-risk youth.
