James L. Caves age 82, died peacefully on Friday (February 23, 2018) at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic surrounded by his loving family.
There will be no prior calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday (March 3) at 10 a.m. in Resthaven Cemetery with Rev. Adrian Tierson officiating.

Jim was born on August 16, 1935 in Auburn N.Y. the son of the late James Walter and Marjory Irene Bullock Caves. Jim was an active member of the United Church of Phelps. He was a charter member of the Phelps Historical Society and past treasurer. He was a 1957 graduate of NYS Forestry college at Syracuse University. Jim owned and operated Caves Lumber in Newark, he was a member of the Genesee Reserve Supply of Rochester and the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association. Jim was a member and past President of Newark Rotary for 44 years. He was 54 year member of the Phelps Fire Department and Ambulance. He was Fireman of the year twice. He was Assistant Chief, secretary, treasurer, Captain and head carpenter of the Department. He was instrumental in building the addition on the old firehouse. Jim was the last culprit of the missing Noah’s Ark Clock that he and his accomplice’s removed to preserve the clock and protect it from being destroyed.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 61 years, Janet Hildreth Caves of Clifton Springs; children Jack (Laurie) Caves of Phelps, Julie (Tim) DeBaere of Phelps, Jeff (Allison) Caves of Clifton Springs; grandchildren Adam, Stacey, Brandon, Jonathan and Sophie; great-grandson, Colin Caves of N.C.; brother, Joel (Shirley) Caves of Wyomissing, Pa.; sister, Nancy (Woodrow Travis) Caves of Geneva.
