Anne Messenger announced Monday she will end her campaign for Congress.
Onondaga County Democrats chose Dana Balter over the weekend as their nominee to run against Congressman John Katko in November. Balter has the endorsement from all four counties in the 24th Congressional District. Messenger said she did not want to try to force a June primary. Another candidate, William Bass, of Syracuse, issued a statement Monday saying he will seek to force a Democratic primary.
Messenger released the following statement:
“It is clear that the NY24th Democratic party has selected Dana Balter as the party’s designee to take on Representative John Katko, and I am therefore ending my campaign for US Congress. I will not split the party further and am taking myself out of the primary field for Dana so she can take on the Congressman.
John Katko’s blind allegiance to the Trump White House must end. We need a representative with the courage to show up and listen to opinions different from his. We need a representative who pushes back on backroom, secretive policy-making. We need a representative who doesn’t pay lip service to bipartisan action, but who can actually reach across the aisle and get results that benefit our district. It is time for a change.
This has been an exciting ride. I am deeply grateful to people across NY24 and beyond who have supported me. They have been at the heart of my campaign.”
Balter is a first time candidate and Katko is seeking a third term in office.
