State Senator Pam Helming recently presented New York State Liberty Medals to Canandaigua Fire Department Captain Don Phillips and Firefighter Ben Cram for their heroic actions in saving the life of Camelot Square Apartment resident Michelle Fridley.
A New York State Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors that a New Yorker can receive. The award is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers and is the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate.
“What an honor and privilege it was to present two Canandaigua firefighters with the New York State Liberty Medal! The Liberty Medal is the highest honor the New York State Senate can bestow upon an individual. Firefighter Ben Cramer and Captain Don Phillips were awarded Liberty Medals for risking their own lives to save Michele Fridley and her pet from a burning building. These heroes demonstrated extreme bravery and courage. I am so honored and humbled to know them and to have had the opportunity to recognize their heroism. We need to continue to do all we can to support our local fire departments and brave first responders,” Senator Pam Helming said.
