Odessa-Montour High School senior Gillian Clark was honored by the Watkins-Montour Rotary Club as its Odessa-Montour Student of the Month for February. Clark was introduced by teacher Russ Gardner, who described the honoree as “a great student” — 4th in her class academically — who volunteers frequently for school and community events, and is a standout three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball and golf, and a two-time Odessa File Odessa-Montour Athlete of the Year). Clark, who has qualified for States in golf in each of the past four years, cited that sport as her best. She plans to attend college, and is considering the University of Buffalo or Tompkins Cortland Community College.
Watkins Glen High School senior Jared Prien was honored by the Watkins-Montour Rotary Club as its Watkins Glen Student of the Month for February. Prien was introduced by English teacher Kelly Muir, who described the honoree as “a kind and generous person” who overcame a difficult circumstance — the death of his mother and a move here from Illinois in the 10th grade to live with a cousin — and an extreme distaste for school to become “a tremendous student.” He was helped by teachers who saw his potential, she said, and now “gives back” by encouraging and leading other students. A gifted writer, he plans to attend Corning Community College and then a four-year school. While he isn’t sure which career path to follow, he said he might become a history teacher, perhaps even at Watkins Glen.
