You know when the flight attendant tells you to put your oxygen mask on first before helping others? Well for some reason lately, I feel this needs revisiting. There are many different ways to parent and as long as those kids feel love and a connection to their family, we are on the right track! I personally require a lot of personal cultivation and inward navigation so I can be the best mother, wife, friend, and motivator, that I can be to others. I take time for me (sometimes in lieu of physically attending a game or other event) and I emerge refreshed, rejuvenated, and spiritually stronger to give to my family in the ways that are uniquely me. I think it is a good example to set for the kids. There are so many obligatory parts of life that we can fill our days and nights with that can leave us haggard and worn. It is okay to excuse ourselves and just say no. We all contribute to the well being of our community in different ways. Do that which makes your heart sing and you’ll be surprised at the refreshed productivity and joy that comes to you. It is oxygen, after all. Breathe in, breathe out…and Smile. Peace & Blue Skies, Donna Bennett

Facts for Heart Health Month
February is heart heath month. Because this is a leap year, we’re lucky enough to have one more day to pay special attention to and celebrate what one considers the body’s most important muscle – the Heart. For the next three weeks Canandaigua The Medicine Shoppe will share impressive, fun helpful and maybe even shocking facts about the Heart.
Heart Health Fact # 1 – Laughing may, in fact, be good for your heart and overall health. Research suggests that a good belly laugh can increase your blood flow by 20%. The positive effects of this chuckle can last for 24 hours (American Heart Association).
Heart Health Fact # 2 – Sadly only 27% of people can identify all the major symptoms of heart attack and know to call 911 immediately. Immediate action saves lives. According to the CDC the signs of a heart attack are: Chest pain or discomfort, upper body pain or discomfort in arms, back, neck, jaw or upper stomach, nausea / lightheadedness, and shortness of breath. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
Heart Health Fact #3 – A woman’s heart typically beats faster than a man’s. On average a woman’s heart beats 78 times per minute vs the average man’s beats 70 times (Lawrence Chilnick)
Heart Health Fact #4 – Evidence of heart disease found in ancient mummies from around the world suggests that heart disease has been an issue for thousands of years. Not long ago, researchers reviewed CT scans of 76 Egyptians mummies and 38 % were found to have probable or definite calcification in their arteries. (Global Heart Journal).
Health Fact # 5- About 1 in every 6 US healthcare dollars is spent on cardiovascular disease each year. It’s the most costly condition in America. When you factor in lost productivity, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates heart disease and stroke costs our country more than $320 billion per year. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
