Former longtime Southern Tier Congressman Maurice Hinchey has passed away at his Saugerties home.
The Democratic lawmaker represented the 22nd Congressional District for 20 years, following an 18-year stint in the state Assembly.
Hinchey retired from Congress back in 2012, had announced back in June he was suffering from a neurological disease.
Hinchey was 79 years old.
Statement on Hinchey’s death from Senator Chuck Schumer:
“I’ve known Maurice since we’ve served together in the assembly in the 1970’s. ‘Mighty Moe’ as I used to call him was a man of great conviction, principle, endless energy and rare legislative ability. He cut a unique figure throughout the Hudson Valley and the Southern Tier, and was passionately committed to the environment and to preserving that region’s priceless open and wild spaces. He will be sorely missed. My sincerest condolences to his family,” said U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer.
