Harold Keithley, 88, of Meridian, N.Y. passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was surrounded by family and had just finished watching “Monday Night Football,” so he was in a good place.
In the home Harold shared with his pre-deceased wife of 65 years, Hazel, there is a doormat proudly displayed that reads: “An old grump and a beautiful person live here.” At times, it wasn’t clear who was who. Friends and family will remember deep down, Harold was a kind soul; it was just layered in grumpiness and stubbornness. He celebrated his 39th birthday multiple times. Whenever he was caught napping, he claimed he was just resting his eyes … with his mouth hanging wide open. In the winter, he sported his “Elmer Fudd” hat often because he didn’t have enough hair to keep his head warm. Harold was an avid bowler and very proud of his 159 average. He also enjoyed puttering around his garden and giving everyone copious amounts of vegetables, and held a great love for animals. Most importantly, Harold was a dedicated husband and father whose generosity and compassion will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his daughters Andrea King, of Pennsylvania; Denice (Raymond) Zink, of Cato, NY and Marcia (Tim) Splinter of Ohio and grumpy son Hal (Linda) Keithley, of Texas, as well as 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The next time they are all gathered, they will have to coerce someone else to make the popcorn.
At Harold’s request, there will be no services. He has elected to spend eternity in an urn right next to Hazel. Donations can be made to the Meridian Church at PO Box 37, Meridian, NY.
