The warm weather has brought out the harmful algal blooms. The Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council on Tuesday heard the blooms are also spreading across many of the Finger Lakes.
Auburn’s Chief Water Plant Operator John West spotted blooms entering the water pumping station on Monday, but he tells Finger Lakes News Radio the temporary carbon filtration system installed in the station is doing its job.
No toxins have been detected in the Owasco water system.
Cayuga County Health Department director Kathleen Cuddy says testing of water samples has been increased from two to three times a week. The latest result came back on Tuesday.
Cuddy adds the department watching for blooms around the Wells College intake pipe in Cayuga Lake and will test water samples there on an as-needed basis.
