Cayuga County legislators are considering joining a multi-county lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies that sell opioids.
The proposal was discussed Wednesday night at both the Judicial and Public Safety and Government Operations Committee meetings. County Coroner Dr. Adam Duckett reported 5 of the 50 deaths he’s investigated this year were from overdoses.
According to the Citizen, lawmakers debated the pros and cons of joining at least nine other counties that have signed on to the suit originally filed in Nassau County. The counties seek to recoup costs associated with drug addiction and overdoses, but legislators and County Attorney Fred Westphal were unsure of the cost to the county associated with collecting the required data.
The lawmakers decided to meet with the two NYC law firms leading the suit and could readress the issue at next month’s Government Operations Committee meeting.
