Parents in Cayuga County are facing a child care crisis. A report from Child Care Solutions on CNY shows a 21% drop in licensed child care programs between February 2015 and July of this year has left just 1,800 slots available for the roughly 75 hundred children who are in need of child care.
Executive Director Lori Schakow said on Thursday’s Finger Lakes Morning News many licensed providers are quitting because of increased federal regulations that went into effect in 2014, but New York’s increased minimum wage also has played a role.
She added much of the county is what the Center for American Progress refers to as a day care desert.
The agency can help low-income families with assistance they may not know is available.
