Leona Sposato, 97, passed away Sunday (July 30, 2017) at Living Center at Geneva – South.
At Leona’s request there will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (August 5) at St. Mary’s Church, 25 Center Street, Waterloo with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Wright Avenue, Waterloo.
Leona requested that memorial contributions be directed to St. Mary’s Church, 25 Center Street, Waterloo, NY 13165 or the Waterloo High School Athletic Hall of Fame, c/o Timothy Lincoln, 96 Start Street, Waterloo, NY 13165.
Leona was born on May 18, 1920 in Jersey City, NJ the daughter of the late Anthony and Catherine (Gigliotti) Cocola. She married Joseph Sposato on January 21, 1950 and moved to Waterloo in 1959. She worked at Shuron Optical in Geneva and retired in 1995 from the Waterloo Central School District. She enjoyed her family, her years of being a homemaker, following Waterloo School Sports. She was also a follower of the New York Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars when Tom Coughlin was coach. Leona was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Waterloo.
Leona is survived by her son, Joseph (Laura) Sposato of Waterloo; her grandsons, Mark (Jenna) Sposato of Cicero and Joseph Sposato of Ithaca; two great-grandchildren, Mary Josephine and Lena Marie Sposato and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1974; sisters Elizabeth Coluzzi, Lucy Quercia and Concetta Elder; brothers, Joseph, James, Frank and Richard Cocola.
