Former Central New York Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle has been picked by President Trump to serve as chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Buerkle, a Republican, represented the former 25th Congressional District which included Syracuse,Wayne County and part of Cayuga County. She served one term in Congress in 2011 and 2012. She has been serving as acting chair at the commission since February. Buerkle is an Auburn native. She had a career in nursing before obtaining a law degree and entering public service. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Buerkle would serve a new seven-year term overseeing the independent agency charged with protecting the public from hazardous consumer products.
