A scuba-diving treasure hunter who found an American Hockey League Hall of Fame ring at the bottom of Canandaigua Lake is returning it to its owner. Gary Gavurnik, of Auburn, plans to return the prized ring to former AHL star Dick Gamble on Monday.
Gavurnik found the ring with a metal detector over the Fourth of July weekend. He tells Finger Lakes News Radio he’s had a little fun with the ring, but is happy to be returning it to its rightful owner.
The 88-year-old Canadian-born Gamble lives in Pittsford. He won a Stanley Cup with the 1953 Montreal Canadiens before he starred for the AHL’s Rochester Americans and retired early in the 1969-70 season. Gamble was inducted into the hall of fame in 2007 and gave the ring to his son, Craig. He wore it every day for seven years before losing it in the lake. Gavurnik hopes he’s not getting the son in trouble.
Craig Gamble reportedly never told his dad he lost the ring and bought a replacement.
