GENEVA - Raymond G. (Ray) Schaffner Jr., 83, passed away early on Sunday (March 17, 2013) in the Geneva Living Center North one.
In keeping with Ray's wishes, there will be no prior calling hours. A Funeral Service will be at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday (March 23) in the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva. The Rev. Deb Lind-Schmitz will officiate. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions, in his memory, may be made to any Veterans Organization or to a charity of one's choice .
Ray was born in Oswego, N.Y. on May 29, 1929, son of the Raymond G. Schaffner, Sr., and Helen Skinner Schaffner Archuleta. Ray graduated from Geneva High School in 1947 and went into the US Air Force where he worked in Communications. After leaving the Air Force he worked for various jobs before he moved to Ft. Pierce, Florida, where he spent 26 years before coming back to Geneva. He enjoyed gardening and his nieces and nephews. He was a life time member of the VFW Post # 2670, Winnek Post # 396 American Legion, and DAV. Ray was awarded the Eagle Scout badge from Troop 3 of the old North Presbyterian Church when he was a kid.
He is survived by his sister, Nancy Lathey of Geneva; his stepfather, Delfineo (Archie) Archuleta of Geneva; niece, Patricia Lathey of Geneva; nephews, Edward (Denice) Lathey of Waterloo, John (Marianne) Lathey of Seneca Falls, Steven (Mary Kay) Lathey of Geneva and Paul ( Theresa) Lathey of Geneva; fourteen great-nieces and nephews; four great-great-nieces and nephews and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his father Raymond G. Schaffner Sr.; and his mother, Helen Archuleta; brother-in-law, William E. Lathey; and his great-nephew, Jeremy Lathey.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Living Center North first floor for all their care they gave Ray during his short stay with them.
