Victor C. Welch

Victor C. Welch CANANDAIGUA- Victor C. Welch, M.D., age 88, died December 17, 2012. Dr. Welch was born and raised in Olean. After graduation from Olean High School, he attended the University of Michigan for pre-medical education and University of Buffalo for his medical degree. He interned at Youngstown Hospital in Ohio. Dr. Welch was a New York State Public Health Physician trained in Chautauqua County. Following his training in public health, he became an industrial physician at E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company in Waynesboro, VA. In 1950, he was drafted into the U. S. Army Reserves and served two years active duty during the Korean Conflict as post surgical industrial physician at the Sioux Army Ordinance Depot, Sidney, Nebraska. In 1951 Dr. Welch married Grace, a chemist who had worked in the research laboratory at the Waynesboro Du Pont plant. Following military service, Dr. Welch returned to the Du Pont plant and became interested in industrial psychiatry. His psychiatric residency, from 1954 ­ 1957, was at the V.A. Hospital, Perry Point, MD with local affiliation to Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland. He pursued a career in psychiatry with the Veterans Administration and served a total of 33 years. During this time he held the positions of staff physician, Chief of Psychiatry, Chief of Staff, Assistant Hospital Director, and Director of V.A. hospitals in Marion, IN; St. Cloud, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; Perry Point, MD; and Canandaigua. Following his retirement from the Veterans Administration in 1987, Dr. Welch served two years at the John L. Norris Alcohol and Drug Abuse Clinic in Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Welch is survived by four sons, Stephen Welch (Sue Rich), Michael (Patricia) Welch, Paul (Suzanne) Welch, and Roy Welch; former daughter-in-law Kathy Welch); and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Grace S. Welch; and sister, Jean M. Welch. At Dr. Welch's request, there will be no services. Interment will be in Bath National Cemetery.
