Jane E. Howland

GENEVA – Jane E. Howland, 87, of Geneva, passed away on Tuesday, (November 27, 2012), in the Living Center North.
Friends may call at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St. on Friday (December 7) from 3 to 6 p.m. A Memorial Service to celebrate Jane's life will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday (December 8) in the Presbyterian Church in Geneva. The Rev. W. James Gerling, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery Hudson Falls at the convenience of the family.
Memorial Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice .
Jane was born in Glens Falls, N.Y. on June 3, 1925 the daughter of the late Amasa W. Howland and Laura French Howland Stiles. Jane received her BA degree from Mount Holyoke College with a Major in Economics and Sociology and a Minor in Psychology. She attended numerous management courses sponsored by the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. at Cornell University and Harvard University. Jane spent her lifetime involved with the Girl Scouts where she started out with the Albany Area Girl Scout Council as a field director from 1947-50, then was the District Director, Camp Director of the Girl Scouts of Delaware County, Penn. from 1950-55. In 1955-61 she was the Executive Director of the Cayuga County Girl Scouts Council and from 1961-1985 she served as Executive Director of the Seven Lakes Girl Scout Council and after her retirement she was affiliated with the Interim executive director program for the Girl Scouts of the USA from 1985-87, serving in
Michigan, Kentucky and the Rochester area. Jane served with the Association of Girl Scout Executive Staff where she held offices as Section I Chair, National President, and on the Nominating Committee.
Jane was active with Civic Activities where she was a member of the Zonta Club and held several offices including President, Geneva League of Women Voters where she was a past president and received the Agnes Slosson Lewis Award in 2001; a former Board member of the Geneva historical Society, former President and Treasurer of the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls and was active with Finger Lakes Health where she was a board member from 1985-95, a member and Past President of the Finance Committee was the nominating Chair for two years and was on the Housing Board as President since its inception until she retired from the board.
Jane was active in her Church – The Presbyterian Church in Geneva where she was ordained an Elder in 1974, past Finance and Property chair, Stewardship Campaign Chair, Bicentennial Campaign Office Coordinator, Personnel and Nominating Committee. She also was a member of the Presbytery of Geneva, served on the Committee of Ministry and Pension Chair serving 63 churches in the Finger Lakes Area.
She is survived by her nieces, Ann Howland-Coone of Fairport, N.Y., Nancy Howland of Queensbery, N.Y. and Marcia and Christine Howland of Cornelius, N.C.; and her nephew, Woodward N. Howland of Green Bay Wis.; nine great-nieces and nephews, David, John, Robert and Michael Ochsendorf, Annie Lichter, Liza Ochsendorf, Caroline, Christina and Patrick Coone; seven great-grand nieces and nephews and her longtime friend,
Barbara Huebner of Geneva.
She was predeceased by her parents and her two brothers, Amasa W. Howland Jr. and Allen E. Howland.
